Counselling Kinesiology™
Counselling Kinesiology™ (CK): DEVELOPMENT AND HISTORY Counselling Kinesiology™ Training is a series of workshops developed by kinesiologist and counsellor, Gordon Dickson ND, Dip.A, B.Eng(hon), ATMS, AIK, AKA. Initially it was introduced as part of the kinesiology training for the Naturopathy Diploma at the Melbourne College of Naturopathy in 1990. It soon grew and developed to become training for kinesiologists wanting to work with people who were having personal or relationship difficulties. It has been taught in its current form for the past 5 years. While most of the participants take these courses for professional development to become more effective in working with others, many now take these courses to use the techniques to enhance their own relationships and in their roles as parents. TRAINING OUTLINE Each course encompasses a three-stage approach. The first stage is “Talk Therapy” where a structured approach of targeted questioning and active listening is taught. The trainee learns how to use this approach to explore the background of an issue, establish rapport with the client and identify appropriate goals. It is also used to identify the limiting factors that have prevented the client from moving forward. The outcome of this approach is to determine the emotional needs that are not being met and, in a process unique to CK, encapsulate them in a series of stress statements. The second stage is experiential and is designed to help a client really touch and connect with the locked up emotions. The trainee is taught the “CK Emotional Stress Circuit” which uses the powerful tool of muscle testing to identify the basis of the client’s attitudes and reactions - areas that are often hidden below conscious awareness. This involves a truly remarkable ability of muscle testing to “time track” to critical memories or impressions, that are often long forgotten or relegated to the back of the mind. When these issues are brought to the surface they are often experienced with strong emotions and can be clearly seen as critical factors in determining lifelong attitudes and reactions. To assist in this unfolding process, the trainee is instructed in the use of the “Developmental Directory™” and “Grief Gauge™” emotional states charts. These tools were developed specifically for Counselling Kinesiology™ to help determine the context of what was going on at these past times and how this created the limitations that maintain the client’s preset day problems. To help in the processing of these emotional issues, the trainee is instructed in 'Inner Child' work and a synthesis of practical approaches, drawn from the psychodynamic, behavioural and cognitive therapies. This is combined with kinesiology de-stressing techniques to gently de-stress emotional blocks. It enables the trainee to help a client (or couple) gain insight and work through to a healthy resolution. The third and final stage is the “Integrative Phase”. To complete the process, the client needs to implement changes. The trainee is instructed in techniques to help the client look at options and form action plans to implement them. These are tested in day-to-day life. Counselling Kinesiology™ is an education model of life skills training, so in addition to the action plan, a series of structured exercises are demonstrated to show how a client can translate the insights of Stage 2 into everyday life. These exercises are especially useful to give to clients having difficulties in their roles as parents or for couples undergoing relationship counselling. A major part of the programme is dedicated to this last phase to ensure that the insights and de-stressings make real differences in the lives of our clients.
