There are hundreds of Meridians described in the various forms of acupuncture. However, there are 12 major or primary, bilateral channels which are the main ones studied or focused upon in texts. Consequently, they are well known in the Acupuncture and Kinesiology fields and have names applied to them that signify to which organs or functions they relate.

These 12 meridians are connected to each other as they travel up and down the body, the energy circulating from one to the other. Additionally, there are two important meridians beyond the pimary 12. These are the Central and Governing Meridians, which relate closely to the many aspects of the nervous system function and are likened to a meridian system in themselves.

There are short, connecting channels between the end of one major meridian and the beginning of the next. The terms ‘beginning’ and’ending’ of these meridians are specific, since the energy flows in one direction only. In fact, energy enters the system at the Lung meridian, flowing down the arm to where it ends on the thumb. Energy from the Lung Meridian goes to the Large Intestine, beginning at the index finger and flowing up the arm, finishing on the head - and so on - generally moving from hand to head to feet to chest region, and back to hand.

The Chinese concept of Yin and Yang, where everything in the Universe is made up of opposites that weave together to create a state of overall balance, is applied here. The Chinese Physician turns to the fundamental theory of the 5 Elements, and in fact, does not see the organs in the same light as Western Medicine or Science, but views them as part of the 5-Element picture, as a network of relationships and functions.

In Touch For Health 2, balancing the 5 Elements is introduced as a way of balancing the 14 major Acupuncture Meridians. Deficiencies in the system are found by testing the muscles relating to the meridians, and then the excesses are found by "circuit locating" the Organ Meridian Alarm Points. Thus one obtains a map of ‘over’ and ‘under’ energy in the parts of the total system. After this some simple rules are used to find the priority meridian to begin correcting the whole 5 element system. This concept has made TFH Kinesiology a very powerful practice in balancing a person back to equilibrium.
