HYPERTON-X
What is HYPERTON-X "Hypertonic muscle balancing”?
HYPERTON-X is a Kinesiology Method (Muscle Testing) which tests for and corrects imbalanced muscles. By 'clearing' these hypertonic muscles, the person becomes more flexible and relaxed and able to use their body in an integrated way, giving improved power and flexibility to their chosen activities.
A Hypertonic muscle has three characteristic - P.W.R:-
1) Pain
2) Weakness
3) Restricted range of motion.
Techniques are also used for Pain and Emotional Stress Release, as well as to enhance physical and mental performance levels, both for learning and sports activities, preparing for pregnancy and childbirth and working with the learning disabled.
Frank Mahony, the developer of HYPERTON-X believed that muscles that had become "Hypertonic" through injury or over-use were responsible for a lot of the imbalances that occur in the Posture, Nervous System, Cerebro-Spinal Fluid flow and Meridian Energy flow.
What is a Hypertonic Muscle?
A Hypertonic Muscle is one that can be identified as restricted in its range of movement (ROM) and would usually be tight and sore. However, if a Hypertonic Muscle was tested directly, it would usually test as being "switched-on" and further testing may show it to be "over-facilitated". Using the usual Kinesiology approach, as well as massage, does not necessarily change this over-facilitated state. Frank Mahony then developed a Method to test for and quickly correct the imbalanced state that often relieved the pain, restriction of movement and postural imbalances.
HYPERTON-X Correction Method
The Correction Method is based on PNF stretching; or Proprioceptor Neuro-Muscular Facilitation. It is a form of "practitioner assisted stretching" of the specific Hypertonic Muscle. The suspect muscle is positioned in its maximum extended range. The client takes a deep inhalation and then a 6-8 second exhalation, while the client applies a persistive contraction against the practitioner holding the limb in a steady position. This is done at the pressure of only (up to) 25% of the contraction of the muscle from the extended position back toward contraction against the practitioners resistance. At the completion of exhalation, the client takes another deep breath in as the practitioner gently extends the muscle by a few degrees, by pursueing the muscle to its increased range of motion.
This is repeated 3 to 5 times after which the muscle has improved its range of movement and is experienced as being significantly more relaxed and improved blood flow. The procedure is then repeated on other muscles that are Hypertonic as assessed by the practitioners’ palpation (feeling the state or tightness in the muscle), range of movement testing and Muscle Testing procedures.
Hypertonic Muscle Correction has been shown to have the following beneficial effects:-
- increase in Neuro-Muscular communication
- re-sets the proprioceptor mechanisms in the muscle spindles and tendon reflexes that may have been shocked due to injury or over-use
- improves circulation in both Vascular and Lymphatic systems
- releases inhibiting signals (interference) from the muscle that may cause a jamming effect in the sensory co-ordination areas of the brain - specifically the Common Integration Area (CIA) in the Logic Brain Cortex
- improves co-ordination through better muscle balance and enhanced cross-lateral stimulation in the Brain
- releases restricted muscles that effect Posture and improves normal flow of Cerebro-Spinal Fluid CSF (note: No Spinal adjustments are used).
I personally (Trevor Savage ND) have used the technique extensively since 1985 when I introduced the program to Australia and have taught several hundred students the correct and accurate use of the procedures of this effective technique. Feedback from practitioners, students and clients has always been very positive and reported results have been encouraging.
There are many areas of application of this system as the essential precepts on which it is based is about overcoming levels of stress and restriction in the body in order to re-establish balance and normal homeostasis of physical functions. Its applications are not only useful as a corrective therapy for treatment of muscle restriction and pain, but also for improvement of physical and even mental performance in many varied situations. Frank found profound improvements in the areas of learning and many people overcame learning difficulties and went on to live normal lives.
Frank Mahony also found great results when using his program for overcoming allergies and sensitivities, emotional stress issues and other areas such as TMJ and pain management. For those who have Touch For Health training short cut balancing is also of great benefit, but this is not necessary for a student to use Hyperton-X in Sports areas and general clinical work.
Frank Mahony - Founder of HYPERTON-X
HISTORY OF HYPERTON-X
Frank Mahony, creator of HYPERTON-X - Total Body - Mind Integration, conducted workshops worldwide, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, and many other countries from 1985 until his death in 1995.
Frank lived in El Segundo, California, and is survived by his son, Mitchell, who lives in Texas. He was a Member of many Associations, including the "Touch For Health Foundation", and was on the Board of the "International Association of Specialised Kinesiologists" in the USA. He was a Touch For Health Instructor, a Faculty Member of the Shiatsu Massage School of California, and was a regular 'Guest Speaker' at the Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Los Angeles.
He had been a featured Speaker at Touch For Health Conferences in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States; the Natural Health Federation in Pasadena, California; and at Austria’s National Sports Training Centre near Innsbruck, presenting some new aspect of his research in HYPERTON-X.
From 1982 to 1986, he was Director of the Burbank office of the Valley Remedial Group, founded by Dr Paul Dennison PhD (Special Ed.), the Developer of Edu-Kinesthetics, where he refined and perfected his techniques to assist the learning impaired (dyslexics, and others).
ATHLETIC APPLICATION
In August 1983 Frank Mahony began working with hurdler Rene Felton in her quest to qualify for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In 1981 Rene set a National Junior College record in the 100 metres hurdles, but was striken with a re-occurance of Chron's disease, a potentially fatal disease of the small & large intestines, which resulted in numerous abdominal surgeries. Her condition in August included pain and swelling in the extremities, and restricted joint movement. By late November Rene was able to join the Puma Energizer Track Club in Santa Monica and astonished her coach with her state of conditioning. After only two weeks of resuming formal training REne was able to compete in her first race in over two years, taking second place. In her final race before the Olympic Trials, Rene kicked a hurdle and missed qualifying for the Olympics by less than one-tenth of a second. However disappointing, she had made a remarkable comeback. From 1982 to 1984 where he worked with members of the Puma Energiser Track Club in Santa Monica, prior to the Olympic Trials for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Rene Felton now lives in Italy and works as a National Coach and Trainer. She is a Champion Athlete and her son Andrew is a two times world champion. She was Frank's first student and today has developed a water therapy version of HYPERTON-X. Rene will be teaching her new program in March or April in 2006.
HYPERTON-X methods are being employed by practitioners working with world class athletes in many countries. One sports therapist who was invited by the American Walking Team, to make a presentation at their National Meeting chose Mahony’s techniques as the cornerstone of her work.
Basic HYPERTON-X concepts are included in the Applied Kinesiology Workshops conducted by Dr Sheldon Deal DC from Swan Natural Healing Clinic in Tucson, Arizona.
Due to its versatility, HyPERTON-X may be applied to a wide variety of difficulties in learning, sports, and physical therapy. Consequently, workshops are attended by a wide range of therapists in sports, natural medicine, and education, athletes, coaches, business people and the general public.
Frank Mahony focused on the "hypertonic muscle state" after being introduced to the Sacral Occipital Technique, a Chiropractic method developed by Dr De Jarnette with the help of Doctors Duarte, Simmons, and Buddingh. Mahony gained an understanding of S.O.T. and the effect it has on Cerebral Spinal Fluid through studies with Dr Curtis Buddingh DC. He then developed a method of detecting and correcting hypertonic muscles that were related to the Sacrum and the Occiput, which results in a profound and often immediate effect on mental and physical performance. Thus HYPERTON-X was born!!
Dr Kay McCarroll DC, an Australian now living in the UK, noted great success in keeping athletes at peak performance in competition in the gruelling 'Six Day Ultra Marathon' in August 1984, and the 'London to Paris Triathalon' in September 1985. Kay and I both attended the first HYPERTON-X workshop taught by Frank at Pasadena, California in July 1985.
Long distance runner, Malcolm Campbell, gives great credit to McCarroll and HYPERTON-X for keeping him fit in the Ultra Marathon, and at age 52, finshed second in a race across the United States in 1985.
German therapist, specialising in Learning Difficulties, gives HYPERTON-X a major share of the credit in correcting one case diagnosed as Schizophrenia.
Frank Mahony died suddenly on 18th September 1995, in Germany, whilst on a teaching workshop tour. His inimitable teaching style and sense of humour endeared him to his many students and friends. He was well known to each of us as a friend and trainer, and he inspired us to be creative and use HYPERTON-X in a variety of ways to achieve body/mind integration. We have carried on his work in the sporting and athletic fields with many spectacular results.
HISTORY OF HYPERTON-X in AUSTRALIA
I first met Frank Mahony in July 1984 at the Worldwide Touch For Health Conference at the University of San Diego in California. He was presenting his new program for the first time to the Kinesiology world and he lectured on 'Performance Enhancement For The Atltete'. Over the years Frank and I became very close friends and regularly communicated with one another about Kinesiology around the world, especially HYPERTON-X.
In July 1985, my wife Jacklyn and I returned to the 1985 TFH Conference and attended Frank’s first HYPERTON-X workshop in Pasadena, California, USA, after the Conference. Frank Mahony authorised me to be the first HYPERTON-X Instructor in the world after this Workshop.
On returning to Australia, we travelled to Melbourne, Hobart, Taree, Inverell, Sydney, Brisbane, Noosa, Cairns and Darwin and taught over 300 people. I then organized Frank’s first visit to Australia as 'keynote speaker' at the 1986 Touch for Health Conference in Sydney.
Following the 1986 TFH Conference, Frank taught his first Basic and Advanced HYPERTON-X workshops in Sydney and then in Canberra. Among those attending were; Parijat Wismer, Don & Sylvia Davies, Jacklyn Savage, Pat Astill (dec'd), Jen Luddington, Toni Gralton, Philip Rafferty, Michael Wild, and myself and most have continued to teach the techniques.
Frank Mahony returned to Australia in April 1987 and I sponsored a series of successful HYPERTON-X Seminars/Workshops for him in Brisbane.
I worked with Patrick Cash, one of Australia’s top international tennis players in August 1985, and assisted him to overcome a serious back injury using HYPERTON-X. The following year, Pat won the 1986 Wimbledon Singles Title in London and acknowledges the assistance I provided. During the TFH Conference in Sydney in 1986, Pat Cash was in Sydney and I introduced him to Frank Mahony. Frank gave Pat a treatment and his playing in the tournament he was competing in was dynamic and certainly surprised Boris Becker, who was the champion of that series at the time.
The techniques have been taught in their original form since 1985, and we now feel that, with the advances made in Kinesiology, we were able to update the Manual. This was done as a tribute to Frank Mahony and we are keen to see HYPERTON-X continue to be used and promoted throughout Australasia by training new instructors throughout the South Pacific.
As a commitment to the continuance of HYPERTON-X throughout the world, I along with fellow Instructors, will be training new Instructors in the future.
I have an agreement with the late Frank Mahony’s family; to publish all the HYPERTON-X materials; teach all workshops; and train Qualified Kinesiologists as HYPERTON-X Instructors, which I am now doing with Certification through the International Institute For Total Mind-Body Integration.
There are now 13 Instructors in Australia and one in Singapore.
